Open Letter to Arthur Attwell

A few months ago I wrote a piece in a new South African quarterly called the Afropolitan on the Cape Town Book fair. In the article I criticized the unfair deal that many South African writers are getting at the hands of publishers, as well as moaned about the lack of black publishers in fiction when there is so much talent. Then a few days ago  in that moment of deep arrogance that most writers have when I was googling myself, I came across Mr. Attwell’s response to my article which, he suggested, was the reason he decided not to buy said quarterly(a pity, I say, as my article was the worst of the lot). Road to Vacation

 

 

My mom is Zimbabwean and I am an exile brat who studied in Harare so when Maria, a Zimbabwean friend of mine, invites my son and I to Zimbabwe for the holiday season, out of sheer boredom and a need to be out of Johannesburg for the holidays, I say yes, after all, I know it all don’t I?
